How Does Rock Salt Work?
A thin layer of water forms, causing the ice to break up.
Unfortunately, the salty runoff then drains into your lawn or garden.
Why Does Rock Salt Kill Grass?
The answer is simple: dehydration.
If the grass can’t absorb enough water, it will turn brown and die offoften in ugly patches.
What Can You Use Instead Of Rock Salt?
They are also more effective than rock salt at lower temperatures.
However, both can be corrosive to concrete and will also harm plants if used excessively.
If you’re concerned about your grass, the most plant-friendly alternative is sand.
A layer of gritty sand will create traction and make it safer to walk up and down your driveway.
One thing it won’t do, though, is melt the ice.
