As Crawford was making his way to the canal on foot, WDSU reporter Jonah Gilmore was panicking.

“I was stressed,” Gilmore toldPeople.

Crawford knew the situation was dire the moment he arrived on the scene.

A police officer told him the water was eight feet deep and too dangerous to wade into.

But Crawford was undeterred.

He ran back into his house and grabbed a hammer.

He asked him to move back while he smashed a window with the hammer.

AndWDSU cameras caught the entire thing.

Im a nurse, so Ive gotta save lives, he told Gilmore as the rain poured down.
