Serve withslow-cooker short ribsfor an unforgettable dinner.
Reduce heat to medium-low; remove and discard garlic and bay leaves.
Gradually whisk in grits.
Cook, whisking constantly, until mixture starts to thicken, 2 to 3 minutes.
Remove from heat; stir in cheese and butter until melted and combined, about 1 minute.
To serve, transfer grits to a large bowl.
Garnish with additional pepper; top with a pat of butter while grits are still warm, if desired.
