Deviled crab is aLowcountrystaple with recipes passed down through the generations.
Why “deviled”?
The dish took its name from the heat of the spices in the mix.
Up to two days ahead: Slice the bread and store in an airtight container at room temperature.
Prepare the crabmeat filling and refrigerate in an airtight container.
Slice the tomatoes and refrigerate in an airtight container.
On the day of serving: Broil the bread.
Top as directed, broil, and serve.

Place bread on a wire rack on a baking sheet; broil until golden brown, about 3 minutes.
Remove pan; set aside.
Broil toast:
Spread crab mixture evenly over bread slices.
