The brood will emerge in a total of 13 states.
These “periodical” cicadas will be easy to tell apart from the ones that normally drone every summer.
Annual cicadas are brown or green and have black or white markings.
The 17-year cicadas will emerge from the ground, leaving holes and small tunnels behind.
The females lay eggs in trees.
Once the nymphs hatch, they drop to the ground and dig down to feed on roots.
There they stay for 13 or 17 years, depending on the species.
Cicada Safari tracks the emergence of broods and is asking for the help of citizen scientists.
you might use the free Cicada Safari app on your mobile gear to report sightings this summer.
