“You just need to be aware of some basic considerations,” Lanuzza tellsSouthern Livingof freezing mason jars.
Can You Freeze Mason Jars?
Regular mouth jars narrow at the top creating ‘shoulders’ where it narrows to the mouth.
This is a weak area when freezing liquids and may crack due to expanding liquids when they freeze."
Lanuzza recommends consumers who choose to freeze mason jars use straight-sided jars, also known as wide-mouth jars.
Temperature
Part of safely freezing food in mason jars is temperature.
So when it comes time to thaw, it is important to let jars thaw in the refrigerator.
“Too much temperature change too quickly may cause glass to crack or break,” Lanuzza says.
“You should never use food that was in a cracked glass vessel.
The risk is not worth the reward in my opinion.”
