Native to the U.S., boxelder bugs sometimes become a nuisance for homeowners in the fall.

They can aggregate in masses and overwhelm yards and homes.

They do not bite, says Bertone.

The biggest issue is that no one wants these distinctive-looking bugs coming indoors.

They usually gravitate towards areas with southern or western exposure.

The immature or nymph stage is similar in shape but more red than adult bugs.

Bugs of various ages often are seen together in large numbers, says Bertone.

But in autumn, you may see them on buildings, concrete walls, or tree trunks.

Once indoors, theyll likely diedue to the warmth and low humidity in your home.

But their presence is annoying, and their feces can stain upholstery, walls, carpets and drapes.
